Back to Our Roots

Do you remember the early days? I sure do.

I remember day one, and I can hardy believe that was 22 years ago. Then as now, Stanfest has always had a vision of being Canada’s Songwriter Festival. We present songwriters, some of the finest in the world. “Lifers” amongst us will remember nights under Canso skies watching Richie Havens, Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker, Don MacLean, Nanci Griffith, Judy Collins, Peter Yarrow, Juice Newton and many, many more.

In general our formula has been to steer for a rule of thirds: 1/3 international, 1/3 East Coast and 1/3 the rest of Canada.

Stanfest has been an important platform for building the East Coast Music industry. We have presented the veterans and the rising stars alike. Many of those we presented as rising stars have become internationally touring, award-winning headliners at festivals around the world. I think of artists like Dave Gunning, Charlie A’Court, Matt Andersen, Irish Mythen. These are all artists who’s first major festival stage was at Stanfest.

In 2018 we are returning to our roots and celebrating the incredible talent of Canada’s East Coast. Weather has challenged us with two extreme weather years out of the past four. Stanfest has become synonymous with resilience, much like its host community, Canso. A tidal wave of the East Coast’s finest will return to Canso to celebrate songwriting and celebrate Stanfest. So far the list includes Catherine MacLellan, Dave Gunning, Irish Mythen, Lennie Gallant, Madison Violet, Makayla Lynn, Matt Andersen, Rawlins Cross and Robert Bouchard. And we are far from done!

With new mid-summer dates and an incredible line-up taking shape we are bracing for a banner year. Don’t delay on securing your camping and tickets. The campgrounds are filling. It will be the music event of the summer, as it has been for 21 years.

Stay tuned for regular posts.
